Organizations that improve the lives of children and young people
are the focus for Hillman Foundation’s support of youth programs
throughout southwestern Pennsylvania. The Foundation principally
supports capital initiatives for the development and growth of youth
centers and grants to initiate and expand youth development programs.
The Foundation does not make grants to recreational programs or athletic
teams or leagues.
Hillman Foundation’s commitment to
the award-winning Pittsburgh Children’s Museum began in 1983, when
the Foundation helped establish this special place in a landmark post
office on Pittsburgh’s Northside. With a celebrated expansion into
the former Buhl Planetarium, the Children’s Museum is one of the
region’s outstanding
educational resources for young children, serving visitors with hands-on,
developmentally
appropriate exhibits, artifacts, performances, storytelling, art activities,
and opportunities for play. The Children’s Museum builds meaningful
partnerships with schools and community groups and is the first LEED-certified “green” children’s
museum in the country.
