Hillman Foundation’s human and social services grantmaking includes
many different types of organizations and programs each year. The trustees
have approved contributions in support of special projects to organizations
that assist women, children, at-risk youth, low-income families, and
the homeless. Capital projects for the development of community centers
and outreach programs that serve individuals with special needs also
receive consideration.
Hillman Foundation support for Allegheny Valley School goes back to
1960, when the school opened to provide residential care and other vital
services to ten children and adults with developmental disabilities.
Today Allegheny Valley School is one of
the largest private programs in Pennsylvania, operating more than
120 residential and therapeutic
programs throughout the state for more than 900 individuals with mental
retardation. Their ages range from ten to 86. Most of the residents
also have multiple physical handicaps and medical complications, and
some have behavior management needs. Allegheny Valley’s programs
provide these people with opportunities and choices and help them
function at their fullest potential and as independently as possible.
Some of the most important needs of individuals and families are met
by human and social service agencies. The Foundation provides assistance
to a wide range of such organizations including: Action Housing, Greater
Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, Blind and Vision Rehabilitation Services
of Pittsburgh, and the Women’s Center and Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh.
