Southwestern Pennsylvania, with its beautiful mountains, rivers and countryside offers many opportunities for outdoor recreation, while Pittsburgh enjoys one of the most naturally beautiful urban settings in the world. Hillman Foundation has supported the enhancement of the natural amenities that promote the growth of tourism and improve the quality of life for residents. The trustees approve grants primarily for the development of parks, riverfront areas, trails, and conservation initiatives including land acquisition.
With 1,700 acres of parkland, Pittsburgh is one of the greenest cities in the country. The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy works with the city to promote the restoration of the four major parks—Frick, Highland, Riverview, and Schenley Parks. Hillman Foundation has provided support for the restoration of the Schenley Park Visitors Center and construction of Schenley Plaza.

Schenley Plaza

The City of Pittsburgh’s remarkable 1,700 acres of parkland are the concern of the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, an organization that works with the city to restore, renew, revitalize and preserve Frick, Highland, Riverview, and Schenley Parks. These four parks had been badly neglected when the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy began its ongoing and much needed restoration efforts. The conservancy approaches these efforts with environmental sensitivity, balancing respect for the parks’ historic landscape design and the recreational needs of today’s users.
